App Rejected for Screenshots: Requirements and Fixes
Screenshot rejections catch many developers off guard. Both Apple and Google have specific rules about what screenshots can show, their dimensions, and how accurately they must represent the app. A screenshot from an old version or a mockup that does not match the current UI will get you rejected.

Apple Screenshot Requirements
Apple requires screenshots for each device size you support. Screenshots must show actual app content, not conceptual art or marketing mock-ups (though you can add text overlays and device frames). They must reflect the current version's UI. Status bar content must be appropriate. If your app looks different on iPad vs. iPhone, you need separate screenshots for each. Maximum 10 screenshots per device type, minimum 1.
Google Play Screenshot Requirements
Google requires 2-8 screenshots. They must be between 320px and 3840px on any dimension, with an aspect ratio no more than 2:1. Like Apple, they must show actual app functionality. Google also requires a Feature Graphic (1024x500px) for the store listing header. Screenshots should not contain excessive promotional text that obscures the app UI.
Common Screenshot Mistakes
Screenshots from an older version that no longer match the current UI, placeholder or lorem ipsum text visible in screenshots, screenshots showing unavailable features, device frames that do not match Apple's current hardware lineup, screenshots that are actually concept renders rather than real app screens, and screenshots with competitor app comparisons (allowed on Google with restrictions, prohibited on Apple).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add marketing text to my screenshots?
Yes, both platforms allow text overlays on screenshots. But the app UI must be clearly visible beneath the text, and the text must be accurate. Apple and Google both prohibit misleading promotional claims in screenshot text.
Do I need screenshots for every iPhone size?
Apple requires screenshots for 6.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays at minimum. Other sizes can use scaled versions of these. iPad screenshots are required if your app supports iPad.
My screenshots were approved before but are now rejected. Why?
If your app's UI has changed significantly since the screenshots were taken, reviewers may flag the discrepancy. Update screenshots to match your current version whenever you make major UI changes.
